I woke up early this morning and decided to catch up on all the recorded shows on the DVR. With this week being premier week for a lot of the talk shows, I absolutely had to get my fix of my usual favorites like Ellen and Rachael Ray. I caught a glimpse of the Steve Harvey Show teaser yesterday morning and decided to record that as well. I wasn’t about to miss any words of wisdom from Oprah (a guest on his show yesterday).

Turns out his entire show was one full hour (well, 45 minutes if you subtract commercials) of pure inspiration. His show was all about success and achieving your dreams. His three main guests were people who turned their passion into their dream career. The one piece of advice offered by Nate Berkus that really hit me hard was “Don’t stand in your own way.”

I do this to myself over and over again. I stand in my own way from what I want. I turn the “negative” faucet on and let my mind get flooded with doubts, while the “go for it” faucet hardly gets turned on. It’s something that I’ve done over and over again. It reminds me of one of the carousel horses. The horse goes around in circles but never goes anywhere. That’s what I allow the negative thoughts to do to me. They force me take ten steps back when all I want to do is leap forward.

I was so proud of myself when I finished my first half marathon in May. It was a huge accomplishment. I envisioned that triumph as a springboard to achieve more, but those ideas fizzled. I stopped running and I fell back into really bad eating habits. It has really taken a toll on my body. I’m tired all of the time from daily stress, and I often wonder what is wrong with me. I shouldn’t feel this way. I’m still young, right? Why can’t I feel good for once? Will these dark circles under my eyes ever go away?

The problem is not with my body, but my mind. I’m getting in my own way of what I want to accomplish. If I want to feel better then I need to do something about it. I can’t just sit around and wait for things to get better. I need to turn off the “negative” faucet and turn on the “go for it” faucet.

So, I did something today. I got out of bed and did a ten minute lifting session. I completed three rotations of:

  • 10 bicep curls
  • 10 tricep dips
  • 30 second plank

It’s not much, but it’s a beginning. I’m proud of my accomplishment today.
